Lego Masters Episode 3
After another very good episode last week which saw the teams building colossal wedding cakes, it was time for the third episode of Season 5 of Lego Masters! Much like with last week, I will only be mentioning the important details.
The theme of this weeks challenge was that the teams had to build a unique and exciting creature that would be sent down a waterfall in slow motion. Halfway through the challenge, Will Arnett stopped the clock and revealed that the Golden Brick was back. For those of you who don’t know what that is, the Golden Brick is awarded to the winning team of a certain challenge, and that team can use it to save themselves from elimination during any challenge, but it can only be used once. In past seasons, the team that got the Golden Brick was decided by the Brickmasters, but as another twist this season, it was announced that the teams would be deciding which team got the Golden Brick. Initially, I thought that it would be a mess, as I felt that most teams would vote for themselves or that everyone would vote for someone else. I soon found out that how it would work was that the Brickmasters would pick the top two teams, and from there, the remaining eight teams would vote on who they thought deserved the Golden Brick.
After the six hours of build time was up, it was time for the teams to present their builds.
The first team to present was Anthony and Joe, who built Lenny the Lazy Lion. The story there was that he was tubing in the jungle with “gorgeous locks,” enjoying his drink and his snack, and what they were hoping to see when he went over the waterfall was beverage spilling, snacks spilling, and hair going wild. The Brickmasters loved that their build had so much personality, all the props around him, and the long, luscious hair. The build then went over the falls, and the hair did exactly what they wanted, as it waved around as it fell. The Brickmasters were now also impressed with how it looked as it fell.
The next team to present was John and Justin, who built Zog the Alien Influencer. The story there was that he traveled to Earth to take the perfect Earth selfie, but he falls down a waterfall, but not before transmitting the selfie back to his planet. The Brickmasters loved that they created such a wonderfully absurd character, and while they were struggling with the fact that it still had the core box, they liked that they used some techniques to try to hide some of the squareness, and they also liked the way it went down the falls with the eyes following them.
The next team to present was Alex and Tone, who built Daniel the Dragon. The story there was that he was obsessed with his jewels, and as he is going over the waterfall, the jewels are going to splash out of the boat, his arms would be flailing, and his eyes would pop out of his head. The Brickmasters loved that they went bold with their colors, but the head was not working for them, as it didn’t read dragon as much as it could, and when their build went over the falls, the model was so big that it blocked the visual of the treasure falling out.
The next team to present was Sage and Ian, who built the See Ya Later Alligator. The story there was that he was an alligator who could not swim, so he has swim trunks on, two paddles in his hands, goggles, and a book on how to swim. After he went down the falls, the Brickmasters loved how the arms were up in the air, the mouth was open, looking at them the whole way down, and staying attached to the boat.
The next team to present was Corey and Rebecca, who built Leaf Cutter Larry, which is an ant for those of you who don’t know. The story was that he was tired of moving leaves over long distances and decided that he can make things go a little faster if he puts on a pair of roller skates. The Brickmasters were impressed with their build, as they were balancing a pretty good sized model on six independent legs, but they acknowledged that there was a lot of risk with it, saying that it could be vulnerable when it went over the falls. Sure enough, they were right, as the legs gave it as soon as it hit the water, resulting in Will Arnett having to assist it off the falls. The Brickmasters said that it was disappointing that it didn’t go the way they wanted it to, but the red and green popped off the waterfall.
The next team to present was Maia and Jaime, who built Percival the Pig. The story there was that Percival had gone on a safari adventure with his safari hat, his binoculars, and since he is a dapper pig, he also had a monocle as well, and what they were hoping for was the hat to fly off and the binoculars juggling on his side. The Brickmasters were impressed with the build, as they captured so much emotion and form in the face, and they were also impressed when it went over the falls, as the hat stayed in focus so they could admire the details as it went down, and they also loved the flip it did.
The next team to present was Ben and Michael, who built the Farmer Float. The story there was that the Old Farmer was taking his prize piggies to the state fair, and what they were hoping for was that as soon as the farmer gets going, they wanted the pigs to start tumbling forward and backward, and he would also be waving his hands the whole way down. The Brickmasters loved that there was a lot of character going on, as they had created a whole scene, and they liked all the building techniques they used, and after it went over the falls, they said that it was clever to have all the pigs separated so they flew all over the place, and the hands on the farmer waving as it went down the falls.
The next team to present was Niki and Brittain, who built Kerfluffen the Caterpillar. The story there was that he had a pebble in his shoe, and sat down by the side of the river to find out which shoe it was in, and before he could get the last shoe off, he jumped up and noticed that all of his shoes had fallen into the river, so now he is trying to catch his shoes, and they were also hoping for him to wiggle on the way down. The Brickmasters thought they had a creative story, and they also loved that they were using the string in a creative way, so that they would hopefully see them flying around. The character had to be nudged by Will Arnett just to make it to the falls, but when it made it to the falls, the Brickmasters were impressed that it stayed as one shape with the shoes in front.
The next team to present was Anne and Luke, who built Sylvester the Sloth. The story there was that he was not having a good day, as he fell asleep hugging a beehive, which was loaded up with 100 bees, and they were hoping they would go all over the place. The Brickmasters were impressed that their character in one piece going down the falls, but they felt that different orientation of their beehive would have allowed for more bees to come out.
The last team to present was Marcella and Krista, who built Will A. Monkey. The story there was that he stole some jewels and was going to take a wondrous journey on a leaf surfboard over the falls, and they were also expecting the tail to give a little wobble and a spectacular crash, where jewels will emerge from inside. The Brickmasters said that it was a confident build, as the posture and the fact that they pivoted away from using ball joints for the legs, got it to stand up, and made their base even wider, but they were still concerned about some of the strength elements. As soon as Will put the build in the water, it collapsed because it was too heavy and the connection points weren’t strong enough to support it. After that, it was time for the Brickmasters to announce which teams were in the top two, and they were revealed to be Anthony and Joe and Ben and Michael, which did not surprise me, as they definitely had the most impressive builds that episode. From there, it was time for the other teams to decide who got the Golden Brick and they unanimously agreed on Anthony and Joe, as their thought process was probably that Ben and Michael are two of the strongest contestants, and if they have the Golden Brick, they can save themselves from elimination if they mess up in any way.
After that, it was time for the Brickmasters to announce which teams were in the bottom two, and they were revealed to be Marcella and Krista and Alex and Tone, which sort of surprised me, as while I was expecting to see Marcella and Krista there, I was expecting the other team to be Corey and Rebecca. The team that was going home was then revealed to be Marcella and Krista, which did not surprise me with all the mistakes they made in their build.
Overall, this was another good episode of Season 5 of Lego Masters, and I’ll see you all next week when the remaining teams take on a challenge themed around Wicked!
