Lego Masters Episode 5
After a great episode last week with a challenge centered around Wicked, it was time for the next episode of Lego Masters! As always, I will only be going over the important details to the episode.
The challenge for this week was that each team had to take a Lego moving machine, either twist, swing, push, or spin, and use it to inspire their build. For the first time in the history of the show, the teams faced off head to head, with each face off having a winner that could win the challenge, and a loser that could go home. Much like with MasterChef last week, the BrickMasters shared which teams they were most concerned about, and as I predicted, those teams ended up being the ones that landed in the bottom.
The first teams to face off were Ben and Michael and Corey and Rebecca, who had to make a build that incorporated twist movement. The story behind Ben and Michael’s build was a Steam Pirate Heist, which featured two dashing steam pirates who decided to commandeer the royal fleet’s new airship, with all of its treasure onboard, and to make their speedy getaway, they take to the sky. The story behind Corey and Rebecca’s build was Twisted Love, and it was a 1950s diner with a giant jukebox in the background, and Benjamina is teaching Michael how do The Twist, but he is not doing a good job and is still learning. The Brickmasters loved the designs of both of their builds, saying that everything in Corey and Rebecca’s build led their eyes to the two figures dancing, admiring their use of horizontal and vertical bricks, and the loose bricks that were used for the female figure’s skirt to make it move around, and told Ben and Michael that while their build was gorgeous, some of the movements were distracting from the main attraction. The Brickmasters then announced that Corey and Rebecca won the face-off, which did not surprise me, but it was surprising in the context of the front runners not having the better build.
The next teams to face off were Anne and Luke and Niki and Brittain, who had to make a build that incorporated swing movement. The story behind Anne and Luke’s build was called Running Out Of Time, and it was that a futuristic hero had found himself stranded on a desolate desert planet, and his only hope of escape is when he stumbles across an ancient steampunk grandfather clock, and to activate the clock, he jumps and grabs on to the huge pendulum as a portal crosses through the clock face for the hero to climb towards his escape. The story behind Niki and Brittain’s build was Bad Day To Be A Convertible, and it was about Carl the Convertible, who went out on what started as a sunny day, when thunderstorms and clouds rolled in, and eventually it was literally raining cats and dogs, and Carl had his wipers on, but it didn’t matter in this case. The Brickmasters said that both teams did a great job at showing off the swing movement, with one being very exaggerated, and the other being very emotional, they loved the story behind Niki and Brittain’s build, but they felt that some of it was on the simple side, saying that adding two big splashes coming off the windshield would have helped tell their story and shown off their building skills, and they told Anne and Luke that they went absolutely massive in their build, saying that it was not only big in scale, but also big in ambition with regards to their motion, and they liked that they put the motion right in focus. The Brickmasters then announced that Anne and Luke won the face-off, which did not surprise me.
The next teams to face off were John and Justin and Maia and Jamie, who had to make a build that incorporated a push movement. The story behind John and Justin’s build was Quest To Recharge, and it was about three robots that work in a factory, their friend forgot to recharge their batteries, and the other two are on a journey to get the rechargeable batteries, and there are pushing pistons in the background they are trying to dodge. The story behind Maia and Jamie’s build was The Ultimate Question, which was about if pineapple belongs on pizza, and it featured The Pineapple King trying to take over the pizza shop by throwing smaller pineapples at the pizza slices, hoping that they will land on the pizza, for the best topping ever. The Brickmasters loved the builds of John and Justin’s robots, saying that they were cute, and that they had created something posable and dynamic, while Maia and Jamie came up with a wacky and wild idea for a story, and gave them two different orientations for their movements with forward and backward and side to side, but they wanted a little more dynamic build in the pizza slices, and they told John and Justin that with the motion of the robots coming towards them, their story was a little hard to read because they put it into so small a space. The Brickmasters then announced that the team that won this face-off was Maia and Jamie, which did not surprise me, as their build seemed a little more creative to me.
The last teams to face off were Anthony and Joe and Sage and Ian, who had to make a build that incorporated a spin movement. The story behind Anthony and Joe’s build was Dr. Spin, which was for people who have chronic back pain and have trouble standing up and feel like the room might be spinning, in which case they would have to see Dr Spin, the local hypnotist. The story behind Sage and Ian’s build was Not So Bad Cat, who had just stolen from the milkman and is speeding away, but then he sees a rabbit in the road and has to stop, and when he tries to stop, his front went up and only his back tires are moving, and while it seems scary, the rabbit ended up being safe. The Brickmasters said that the juxtaposition of the tiny rabbit with the massive cat worked really well in the storytelling, but they felt that the movement of the back wheels got lost in the wow of the rest of the build, while they felt that Anthony and Joe’s build had hypnotized them to love spinning as they were showing it in so many different ways, as it was on the wall, horizontal, and vertical, but it was all compelling and drove towards their story, but they did acknowledge that the hypnotist was wearing a purple coat and the letters in the background were also purple, and they didn’t want the key character to get lost and blend in with the background. They then announced that the team that won this face-off was Anthony and Joe, which did not surprise me, as I felt that the movement was more prevalent in their build.
After that, it was time for the Brickmasters to decide which of the four winning teams had the best build of the day. They then announced that the best build of the day was from Corey and Rebecca, which surprised me at first, as I was sure that Anne and Luke were going to win. It was then time for the Brickmasters to decide which of the four losing teams had the worst build and would be going home. They then announced that it was Niki and Brittain, which did not surprise me, as the movement in their build was very minimal compared to other teams.
Overall, this was another great episode of Lego Masters Season 5, and I’ll see you all next week when the teams have to take on a Batman challenge!
