Lego Masters Episode 6

After another great episode of Lego Masters last week with a challenge centered around movements, it was time for a challenge centered around Batman! I was surprised that it took them this long to have a Batman themed challenge, as not only is Batman one of the most iconic franchises to be turned into Lego, the show is hosted by Will Arnett, who literally voiced Batman in The Lego Movies. As always, I will be focusing on the important details when writing about this episode.

The challenge for this week was that each team had to take one of the Batman movies or TV shows and use it as inspiration to build a Batmobile. The seven Batman eras that the teams could choose from were the 1960s Batman TV Series, Batman and Batman Returns, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Batman, and The Lego Batman Movie. Halfway through the challenge, Will Arnett announced that the Golden Brick was back in play.

After time was up, it was time for the teams to present their builds and for the Brickmasters to provide feedback.

The first team to present their build was Corey and Rebecca, who were inspired by Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. They built a Bat Limo, which had a spinning jet on the back, snowplows on the side to stop Mr Freeze, and when Batman was done beating him, there was a hot tub in the back to help him relax and warm up. The Brickmasters said they did a good job at capturing the elegance of the previous movies and the absurdity of the two movies they got, but the transition to the elegance at the front almost hit a wall, as it had a very nice shaping, but then it jutted up into a box form.

The next team to present was Ben and Michael, who were inspired by Batman and Batman Returns. They built a Bat Track, which had tank treads, headlights, a giant fan, and bat wing doors. The Brickmasters felt that they did a great job capturing the style of the two movies they had to work with, but they felt that the tank treads felt a little too industrial, when they should have been more elegant.

The next team to present was Anthony and Joe, who were inspired by Batman: The Animated Series. They built a bat shop that made a customized jet that included many things, including an ejection seat. The Brickmasters loved their build, but felt that it was a little flat in places.

The next team to present was John and Justin, who were inspired by the 1960s Batman Show. They built a Bat Skimobile, which was great in the mountains, great in the water, and it features incredible comforts including snow shoes to be able to trek around in the snow, a red phone to call Commissioner Gordon, and a “Pow!” Sign that was supposed to pop up from the back of the vehicle, but unfortunately it didn’t work. The Brickmasters loved that they went for bubbly, rounded shapes that were common to the era, but that was also where some of the challenges came in with regards to getting a polished build, as they were not getting the smooth curves and lines that they would expect at this point in the competition.

The next team to present was Anne and Luke, who were inspired by The Dark Knight Trilogy. They built a Bat Big Rig, which was an 18 wheeler that had an ATV in its trailer as well as a mono wheel. The Brickmasters said that they did a great job at building a vehicle that was dark, industrial, and aggressive.

The next team to present was Maia and Jamie, who were inspired by The Batman. They built the Bat Boat 5000, which had a sleek design, running lights on the side, booster rockets in the back, and a net in the front. The Brickmasters liked the concept of the net going in and out, but they were struggling to see it fitting into The Batman world, as the fins on the back were perfect for some of the other eras, but not the one they got, and there wasn’t that much smooth curvature, which ruined the silhouette of it looking like a boat.

The last team to present was Sage and Ian, who were inspired by The Lego Batman Movie. They built the Bat Mower, which is designed to cut any grass and poison ivy. The Brickmasters loved how they captured the spirit of the movie with their build, as it was playful and wacky.

After that, the Brickmasters announced that they were so impressed by some of the builds that rather than a top two, there was a top three, which was Ben and Michael, Anne and Luke, and Sage and Ian. In the end, the winning team was Anne and Luke, which surprised me when I first saw it, as I was sure that Sage and Ian were going to win, but after thinking about the scale of Anne and Luke’s build, it made sense.

After that, it was time for the Brickmasters to announce which teams were in the bottom two, and they were revealed to be John and Justin and Maia and Jamie, which did not surprise me. The team that was going home was then revealed to be John and Justin, which also did not surprise me.

Overall, this was another great episode of Season 5 of Lego Masters! Next week, the show is taking the week off, so I will see you all in two weeks, when the teams have to make wearable masks for a costume party!
