MasterChef Episode 3
After two great episodes of audition rounds, it was time for Second Chance Battles! I was glad to see that all the contestants that didn’t get aprons got a second chance, as I felt that a lot of them still made great dishes in their initial audition rounds. I also feel that they should have done this same thing during the Back To Win season, as there were many contestants they brought back that made great dishes but still didn’t get aprons again.
In order for the duos to get aprons, they had 45 minutes to make whatever they wanted, but they had to make three identical plates, with one for each judge. The first duo to present their dish was Darce and Courtney, the animal ER nurses. Their dish was Vegan Fish & Chips with Beer Battered Banana Blossom, Tarragon Mushy Peas, and Caper & Dill Tarter Sauce, and while I do love Fish & Chips, I do not think that I would want to try this dish. The judges really liked the dish though, as they really liked the banana blossoms, saying that the batter was nice and crispy, they thought the tarter sauce was delicious, creamy, and flavorful, and they thought they did a good job at capturing the essence of fish and chips, with the only complaint being that the fries were inconsistent, with one being crispy and one being slightly firm.
The next duo to present their dish was cousins Shanda and Asa. Their dish was a Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna with Coconut Rice, Mixed Greens, and Creme Fraiche Wasabi, which is a dish that I might consider trying. Despite the fact that they showed Joe asking both of them what the rice needed and them being unable to answer, the judges ended up liking the rice, as well as the salad and the fish, but they felt that it was missing a sauce to tie it all together.
The next duo to present their dish was grandmothers Milah and Lisa. Their dish was an Herb Crusted Lamb with Rainbow Carrots, Asparagus, Cauliflower Puree, and Red Wine Demi-Glace, which is dish that I would be willing to try. The judges thought the cook on the lamb was great, but the sauce was broken.
The next duo to present their dish was firefighters Javi and Luis. Their dish was Cuban Picadillo with White Rice, Tostones, Cuban Salad, and Peruvian Green Sauce, which is a dish that I would be willing to try. The judges thought it was a great dish, but they needed more flavor from the beef and more crunch from the tostones.
The next duo to present their dish was divorced couple Azu and Javier. Their dish was Chiles En Nogada with Poblano Pepper, Picadillo, and Walnut Sauce, which is a dish that I might be willing to give a try. The judges all really liked the dish, and had little to no complaints about it, the closest being Joe saying that he found it a little bit sweet.
The next duo to present their dish was brothers Adam and Joel. Their dish was Shrimp & Grits with Coffee and Coke Sauce, Cheddar Grits, Rainbow Chard Slaw, and Toast Points, which is a dish that I would definitely want to try. The judges could not have been more positive with this dish, as they had virtually no complaints whatsoever.
The next duo to present their dish was long term couple Jessica and Jesse. Their dish was Berbere Spiced Lamb Lollipops with Roasted Cauliflower, Whipped Feta, and Pickled Apples and Fresnos, which is a dish that I would definitely try. Once again, the judges really liked their dish and had little to no criticisms.
The last duo to present their dish was married couple Spencer and McKenna. Their dish was a New York Strip Steak with Cognac Peppercorn Sauce, Sautéed Spinach, and Twice Baked Potatoes, which is a dish that I would definitely be willing to give a try. The judges liked the cook on the steak, but they had problems with the potatoes and the sauce.
After that, it was time for the judges to decide which four duos got the last aprons, and they announced them in this order, Azu and Javier, Adam and Joel, Darce and Courtney, and Jessica and Jesse. None of these decisions surprised me.
Overall, this was another great episode of Season 15 of MasterChef, and I’ll see you all next week when the competition begins and the duos have to make their best Dinner Party dishes!
