Lego Masters Episode 8

After an entertaining episode last week where the contestants had to make masks, it was time for the “Is It Brick” challenge! To explain what this is, it’s the Lego version of “Is It Cake,” in which the teams had to choose an object that was in a room on the set, and then make an exact replica of it out of Lego. After build time is up, all the builds would be placed back in the room, and a special guest would come in and try to guess what is real and what is brick, and teams would do well based on how they did with replicating their object and if they were able to fool the guest.

When time was up, the teams presented what they had made.

Anne and Luke chose to replicate a full-size bed. Even when I found out that was what they were doing, I knew they were going to be in trouble, as the last time they had this challenge, there was a team who chose to build a replica of a carpet, and struggled to do so, didn’t finish it, and were saved because they used the Golden Brick. This bed was even bigger, had many layers to it, and was also going to be very heavy. Much to my surprise, they actually seemed to be doing well for the most part, as they were close to finishing it, but unfortunately, with only five minutes left, it collapsed as the frame wasn’t strong enough to support the weight of the thousands of bricks that made the checkerboard pattern on the blanket. With almost no time to fix it, they had to present it in the way it was, and hope that the guest would not think to look at it. The Brickmasters acknowledged what went wrong with the build, but they also acknowledged what a huge risk they took.

Ben and Michael chose to replicate an electric guitar, as they wanted to replicate something that would stand out more prominent in the room as opposed to some of the boxy objects. The Brickmasters were amazed at what they were able to accomplish, as they had all the curvature, smooth and clean surfaces, strings, and their scaling was perfect.

Corey and Rebecca chose to build a replica of a skateboard because it was such an iconic shape, and the checkerboard pattern was calling out to him, and they even had rolling wheels and scuffed up grip tape on the back. The Brickmasters said that while they did pick the smallest item out of all the teams, it did still have some complexities, as there were curves in all different ways, and they did a great job of capturing the overall essence of the skateboard, but they also added that if they went forward following that challenge, they wanted to see them push their ambition.

Anthony and Joe chose to build a replica of an amplifier, which was meaningful towards Joe as a music teacher, but there were some details missing. The Brickmasters said they nailed the proportions of the amplifier, and they did a great job at making the grill, as they used two different tones in it, which made it feel used and worn, but they did acknowledge that there were some parts that felt unfinished and unpolished.

Sage and Ian chose to build a replica of a keyboard, as Ian loves building on a one-to-one scale, and he saw an opportunity to add so many details, and to get the smooth look on the keyboard, they used lots of different plates and slopes to the point that there was not a single stud showing on the entire build. The Brickmasters were amazed with their build, as the keys looked like you could go up and start playing them, and the buttons sticking out just enough to feel like you can press them.

After that, the replicas were brought into the bedroom, and it was revealed that there were actually two guests that would be trying to figure out which objects were Lego replicas, and they were Season 2 winners Mark and Steven. They were able to correctly identify all but one object as being Lego correctly, and the one object they couldn’t guess correctly was the keyboard.

After that, it was announced that Sage and Ian had won the challenge, which did not surprise me, as they did an amazing job at making a replica of the keyboard, and it was the only build to fool Mark and Steven.

From there, the Brickmasters announced the bottom two teams, which were Anne and Luke and Corey and Rebecca, which did not surprise me, as they both had the exact opposite problem, with Anne and Luke being way too ambitious and Corey and Rebecca playing it too safe. It was then announced that Anne and Luke were going to be eliminated, which did not surprise me, as their build did not come together in the last five minutes.
Overall, this was another good episode of Season 5 of Lego Masters, and I’ll see you all next week in the Semifinals, which will have a very unique challenge!
