Match Game Episode 4 AKA The Reminder Of Why I Love Adam Pally So Much
Before I get into this blog post, here’s a quick disclaimer.
I will not be writing a blog post for this weeks episode of MasterChef, and maybe not even for the remaining episodes. There are a number of reasons why I decided this, but the main ones are that last nights episode gave me nothing to talk about, and with my current deadlines that I like to follow and the fact that there is an entire episode of Match Game I have to write about, for the last few weeks, I have finished my blog posts way too late at night, so this is my way of making things easier for myself and to keep enjoying what I do.
Now that that’s out of the way, here’s the actual blog post!
After another great episode last week, it was time for the fourth episode of Match Game! As always, I was looking forward to this episode for many reasons, the most important being the fact that some of the best panelists from the Baldwin version were back again.
Before I get into the episode, I will share with you all who the panelists were, as well as a quick explanation as to who they are.
Beanie Feldstein - Actress known for starring in Lady Bird, Booksmart, American Crime Story: Impeachment and for her roles on Broadway in Hello, Dolly and Funny Girl. Fun fact about her, many years ago, she was my friend’s camp counselor at a sleep-away camp in Kent, Connecticut.
Caroline Rhea - Actress and comedian known for starring in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Joel Kim Booster - Actor and comedian known for starring in Fire Island, Loot, and Love Hotel.
Adam Pally - Actor and comedian known for starring in Happy Endings, The Mindy Project, and the Sonic The Hedgehog movies and spinoff show Knuckles.
Constance Zimmer - Actress known for starring in Entourage, UnReal, and House of Cards.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph - actress known for starring in Only Murders in the Building, The Holdovers, and many stage shows.
The episode started off with Martin saying that it was more than a thrill to be on the show that night, it was a complete and utter obligation, and the good news was that when the hour was done, he would only have seven hours to go to fulfill his community service.
He then started talking to the celebrities, starting with Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who he said was his costar on Only Murders in the Building, which premieres September 9 on Hulu.
He then introduced Caroline Rhea, who he said he read an article about, and he saw that her safe word was “Lasagna.” He asked her what that meant, and she said that it was only if she is with an Italian, and otherwise, her safe word is “Poutine,” as in “You’re not poutine that in me.” This prompted Martin to ask her how she could bring a show so lowbrow right off the top.
He then introduced Beanie Feldstein, who he said is going to be on the next season of Only Murders in the Building, which premieres September 9 on Hulu. He then added that Beanie got a little confused when she first met Steve Martin, as she said “Hey! It’s the jerk!” And it was only later that she found out he made a movie of the same name.
He then introduced Adam Pally, telling him he loved his beard and that his wife is the greatest lady you’ve ever met imaginable, and then told Adam that he looked like a Ken Doll auditioning for The Village People.
He then introduced Constance Zimmer, who first started off by saying that she was glowing in the shade that was being thrown. Martin then said that Constance makes being an actress look easy, before realizing that he misread it, as it actually said even for an actress, Constance is easy.
He then introduced Joel Kim Booster, and what happened next consisted of him calling him Jim Cole Booster. After that, it was time to meet the first two contestants of the night. The first contestant we were introduced to was Janelle, who is an identical twin.
The second contestant we were introduced to was Marc, who is an event planner who also works on Broadway, and has three Tony Awards for Hadestown, Merrily We Roll Along, and the recent revival of Company, which I find very impressive.
From there, it was time for the first question of the game, which was for Marc.
The question was “They’re turning the Statue of Liberty into an Airbnb, but they’re issuing a warning to all overnight guests. No naked shenanigans on Lady Liberty’s _________.” The first answer that occurred to me was “Torch.”
After all the panelists had locked in their answers, Marc gave his answer, which was “Crown.”
Beanie then revealed that her answer was “Torch,” which Martin said was a good answer, but it wouldn’t get anybody any money.
Caroline then revealed that her answer was also “Torch.”
Joel then said that he thought that because he was sitting next to Caroline, that influenced his answer, as he then revealed that he wrote “Breasts (Huge).”
Then, in a funny moment, Adam refused to show his answer, instead offering to show Martin his answer and having him show it. Martin then said that when you get low-rent people on a classy show like that, you end up with what Adam wrote, which was censored. While I don’t know exactly what he wrote, if I had to guess, it would be a word that refers to women’s body parts. Or a cat. Or a willow.
Constance then revealed that she wrote “Crown,” which gave Marc a point.
Da’Vine then revealed that she also wrote “Crown,” which meant that Marc had two points.
After that, it was time for Janelle’s first question. The question was “I’m finally giving the fans what they want - merch. Martin Short’s Short-Short Board Shorts. Like me, they’re small, and they have a whole lot of ____________.” I had no idea what the answer could possibly be, as I had no idea what Board Shorts were, and even still I’m not entirely confident that I know exactly what they are.
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Janelle gave her answer, which was “Class,” which I was sure was not going to match anyone.
Beanie then revealed that she wrote “Pizazz.”
Caroline then revealed that she wrote “Package.”
Joel then revealed that he wrote “Junk In The Trunk.”
Adam then revealed that he wrote “Debt,” to which Martin responded by asking him why must he know everything.
Constance then revealed that she wrote “Balls.”
Da’Vine then revealed that she wrote “Sass.”
This meant that at the end of Round 1, Marc had two points and Janelle had zero points.
After that, the show came back from commercials, and Martin described the show as the show that will probably keep him out of the Emmys’ In Memoriam.
From there, it was time for Marc’s second question, where he could now match with the other four panelists.
The question was “Hal said, ‘It’s going to rain, I can feel it in my knee.’ And his wife said ‘That’s better than last week. You said “It’s going to be windy, I can feel it in my ____________.”’” From there, I figured that the answer would be “Butt.” While the panelists were writing their answers, Caroline wanted him to read it again, which resulted in Adam chanting for him to read it again, which resulted in Martin joining in as well, and then reading the question again as a chant.
After that, all the panelists had locked in their answers, and Marc gave his answer, which was “Penis.”
Beanie then revealed that she wrote “Nose Hairs,” right after saying that Caroline told her to throw out her original answer.
Caroline then revealed that she wrote “Butt,” which Martin then said would have been his answer.
Joel then revealed that he wrote “Ass” as his answer, with “I’m Sorry” in parentheses underneath.
Then they got to Adam. Oh boy, did Adam give an answer.
For those of you who don’t know, Adam was a panelist on the Alec Baldwin version, and he was hilarious there, from saying that he has nightmares about George Wendt, to telling a contestant he had no idea what she was thinking with her answer, and his increased frustration with Neil deGrasse Tyson not answering the questions correctly, so I was excited to see that he was back on this one.
So, back to the episode at hand.
When Martin asked him to reveal what he wrote, Adam revealed that he had run out of cards, but he had one of his old ones, so he ended up submitting his censored answer for a SECOND time, making me even more confident that he wrote down a certain body part on women.
This meant that Marc still had two points, and now it was time for Janelle’s second question, and she needed two to tie and three to win.
Her second question was “Mark Zuckerberg is insanely rich. But if you look at him, clearly, he still won’t pay full price for a ______________.” My parents quickly said “Haircut” as their answer. As the celebrities were locking in their answers, Adam locked his in, and after doing so, he immediately started shaking his head and covered his face, which really should have warned me that he gave a terrible answer.
After that, Janelle gave her answer, which was “Haircut.”
Beanie then revealed that she wrote “Haircut,” which was a match, prompting Martin to say that Janelle now needed one to tie and two to win, to which Caroline tried to tell him that he was wrong.
Caroline then revealed that she also wrote “Haircut,” tying up the score. Joel then revealed that he wrote “Haircut” as well, giving Janelle the win.
As always, the remaining panelists revealed what they had written, and Da’Vine wrote “Stylist” and Constance wrote “Toupee.”
Remember how I said that Adam was clearly ashamed of his answer? Well there’s a reason for that.
When Adam revealed what answer he had locked in, he revealed that it was the censored answer that I think was the lady body part again, meaning that he had submitted that answer for a THIRD time and for a total of THREE DIFFERENT QUESTIONS. This is easily one of the craziest things to have happened on the show, and I absolutely loved it.
After that, it was time for Super Match, and Janelle had a chance to win $25,000. Janelle said that if she won that money, she would go island hopping with her twin sister in Hawaii. It started with an Audience Match, and the Match Game Home Audience was polled, and the show collected their most popular responses to “_________ Mail.” From there, me and my parents said “Voice,” “Snail,” and “E.”
To help with suggestions, Janelle enlisted the aid of three celebrities.
She started with Beanie, who said “Junk.” She then went with Caroline, who said “E-mail.”
Her third choice was Da’Vine, who said “You’ve Got.” From there, Janelle chose to go with “E” as her answer, which I thought was smart.
The third most popular answer for $2,000 was then revealed, which was “Junk.”
The second most popular for $3,000 was then revealed, which was “Snail.” The most popular answer for $5,000 was then revealed, which was “E,” meaning that Janelle had just won $5,000.
From there, she now had a chance to win $25,000, so she chose Caroline for the Celebrity Head To Head Match.
Caroline now had to write down her answer to “__________ Cruise.” Three answers occurred to me, which were “Sea,” “Jungle,” and “Disney.” My parents then said “Tom,” and they convinced me that was what Caroline was going to say. While Caroline was writing her answer, she first said to Adam, “If you say _________, I’m gonna slap you,” and you can probably guess what she said. Adam then held up his card and said “I do think this is the one instance where this does fit,” which is incredible, as he managed to keep the joke going FOUR TIMES.
After that Caroline locked in her answer, and Janelle gave her answer.
And let me tell you something, while I knew there were many answers to this and there might not be a match, I was not ready for what Janelle’s answer was, as both my parents and I thought it was terrible.
Another thing you should know before I tell you her answer is that Janelle said right at the beginning of the show that she is LGBTQ.
The reason why I am sharing this is because her answer to “__________ Cruise” was “Gay Cruise,” which in my opinion, is a very bizarre answer. That being said, it did give us another funny Adam moment, where he said to Caroline “Anybody want to apologize?”
Caroline then revealed that her answer was “Tom,” which meant that Janelle did not make a match, but she did win $5,000.
After that, it was time for a commercial break, which Martin said would consist of commercial for several medications that he is on.
The show then returned, and Martin was talking to Adam, telling him that in the many years he has known him, he has become very woke, as five years ago, Adam thought “Harass” was two words.
From there, it was time to meet the two players for the second game. The first contestant we were introduced to was Joe, who is an adventure tour guide, meaning that he goes hiking, he goes canoeing, and he goes kayaking for a living. He also believes in mythical creatures like Bigfoot, and has even gone searching for him. Joe then said that Bigfoot is real, as he went Bigfoot hunting once, and they didn’t find him, but he is out there. Martin then asked him if he ever gets bothered when people call him naive, and Joe responded by saying that they were crazy and he didn’t know what they were saying. Wow, that might be one of the most bizarre things I have ever written for this show, which is saying A LOT.
The second contestant we were introduced to was Marianne, whose husband is a super-fan of Match Game, and it was apparently on one of their first dates when he told her how much he loved Match Game, and he is also currently running for election, which is why he couldn’t be on the show, so she applied as a major act of love.
From there, it was time for Marianne’s first question.
The question was “Forget Ted Lasso. Watch Boston crime show Ned Masshole. It’s about a detective who keeps blowing interrogations because he won’t stop talking about ___________.” From there, I figured that the correct answer would be some sort of Boston sports team like the Red Sox.
After all the panelists had locked in their answers, Marianne gave her answer, which was “The Red Sox.”
Beanie then revealed that she wrote “The Red Sox.”
When Martin got to Caroline, she asked him if he wanted to read the question again, and he responded by saying that it had only been eight seconds, but he would read it again, so he did.
Caroline then revealed that she wrote “The Red Sox.”
Joel then revealed that he wrote down the “number one sports team in Boston,” “The Cops.”
Adam then revealed that he also wrote “The Red Sox.”
Constance then revealed that she wrote “Himself.”
Da’Vine then revealed that she wrote “His Junk.”
This meant that Marianne had three points, and from there, it was time for Joe’s first question.
The question was “Good news, The Avengers have assembled for group therapy. The therapist’s only complaint - somebody always leaves a ____________ behind.” I couldn’t think of an answer, which is surprising considering I have seen all The Avengers movies and several other Marvel movies.
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Joe gave his answer, which was “Shield,” which I thought was a good answer.
Beanie started off by going on a tangent about one time in ninth grade when she went on a trip down the Colorado River, and the adventure tour guide told her that she was “Ruining the Colorado,” which is how bad she is at being outdoors. She then said that she was good with Joe because she wrote Shield.
Martin and the other panelists then added that they did not expect them to match, as the setup did not indicate that there was a correct answer, it had to do with nothing, and it was a long setup.
Caroline then revealed that she wrote “Cape.”
Joel then revealed that he wrote “Mask.”
Adam then revealed that he wrote “Cape,” while also saying that he didn’t get the answer right, but he did feel that he was finally getting the hang of the game.
Constance then revealed that she wrote “Shield.”
Da’Vine then revealed that she wrote “Weapon/Gadget.”
This meant that at the end of Round 1, Marianne had three points and Joe had two points.
After that, it was time for Round 2 and Marianne’s second question. Since she matched with three celebrities in the first round, she could now match with the other three.
Her question was “Match Game made-up news story. Bruno Mars is going through bankruptcy. He used to sing Locked Out of Heaven. Now he’s just locked out of his ___________.” My parents and I said “House” and “Bank Account” as answers.
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Marianne gave her answer, which was “House.”
Joel then revealed that he wrote “Mansion,” which was accepted as a match.
Constance then revealed that she wrote “House.” Da’Vine then revealed that she wrote “Bank Account.”
This meant that Marianne now had five points, and Joe needed to match with three of the remaining panelists to tie, and all four to win.
His question was “Jerry the Giraffe said, ‘You know what they say about guys with big necks. It’s hard to buy them a ______________.” After that, my parents immediately decided that the correct answer was “Tie.”
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Joe gave his answer, which was “Necklace,” and as soon as he said that, I knew that he wasn’t going to match any of the celebrities.
Caroline then revealed that she wrote “Tie.”
Joel then revealed that he wrote “Necktie” as his answer, which gave Marianne the win.
Da’Vine then showed that she wrote “Turtleneck,” and Adam showed that he wrote “Neck Brace.”
After that, it was time for Super Match, and Marianne had a chance to win $25,000, and she said that if she won that money, she would build a fence around the yard and adopt even more large dogs. It started with an Audience Match, and they polled the Match Game Home Audience and got their most popular responses to “__________ Aid.” From there, answers that occurred to me were “Band,” “First,” and “Live.”
The first celebrity she enlisted aid from was Beanie, who said “First.”
She then asked Caroline, who said “Hearing.”
She then asked Joel, who said “Band.”
Marianne then decided to go with “First” as her answer. From there, they revealed the $2,000 third most popular answer, which was “Rite.” You know, that pharmacy chain that I don’t know if it even exists anymore.
Then, the $3,000 second most popular answer was revealed, which was “Band.”
Then, the $5,000 most popular answer was revealed to be “First,” which meant that Marianne had won $5,000.
Then it was time for the Celebrity Head To Head Match, where Marianne had a chance to win $25,000, and she chose to stick with Beanie.
Then, Beanie had to write down her answer to “Iced __________.” As soon as me and my parents saw that one, we immediately knew that the answer was “Tea.”
After that, Beanie locked in her answer in record time, which is not an exaggeration, as she took almost no time to come up with her answer, and I know how long it takes sometimes, as one time at one of the episodes I saw get taped, one celebrity took so long to write his answer that the music literally ran out.
Marianne then gave her answer, which was “Coffee,” which made my parents groan, as they felt that “Tea” could not have been more obvious, and indeed, they were proven to be correct, as Beanie revealed that she wrote “Tea” as her answer.
This meant that Marianne did not make a match, but she did win $5,000.
Overall, this was another great episode of Match Game, and I’ll see you all next week with the next episode!
