Match Game Episode 6 AKA Thomas Lennon Is In Control Now And Andrea Martin Channels Robert De Niro
After another amazing episode last week, it was time for another episode of Match Game! I was looking forward to this episode, as not only were we going to see more favorites return again, we were going to see another favorite from the Baldwin version who randomly stopped appearing after a while.
Before I get into the episode, I am going to share with you all who the celebrity panelists were, as well as what makes them famous.
Thomas Lennon - comedian, actor, and screenwriter known for starring in Reno 911 and The Odd Couple, and for writing the Night at the Museum films.
Andrea Martin - actress known for starring in SCTV, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Evil, Only Murders in the Building, and her extensive list of Broadway credits which has gotten her two Tony Awards.
Tituss Burgess - actor and singer known for starring in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and his many roles on Broadway.
Ego Nwodim, actress, comedian, and cast member on Saturday Night Live.
Pete Holmes - actor, comedian, and podcast host known for his comedy specials, hosting his own late night talk show, creating and starring in the show Crashing, and for hosting the podcast You Made It Weird.
Von Miller - professional football linebacker who is also a two time Super Bowl champion.
The episode started off like all the other episodes, with Martin talking to the celebrity panelists.
He told Thomas Lennon that he has done so many projects and so many appearances, and then asked him if he was in anything he might have seen, to which Thomas responded “No.”
He then introduced Andrea Martin as his sister-in-law, which is actually true, as Martin used to be married to Nancy Dolman, while Andrea was married to her brother Bob Dolman. He then said that more importantly, she has won Emmys and a Tony Award, before correcting himself and saying that it was two Tony Awards. He then said that they did Godspell together back in 1972, before showing an image of it, and saying the names of all the people in it with them, to which Andrea responded that one of them has aged very well.
He then introduced Tituss Burgess, and while he didn’t say anything, there was something that was immediately noticeable about him that had changed, which was that he now has hair, as he was bald when he appeared on the Baldwin version.
He then introduced Ego Nwodim by asking her of all the Canadians she met on SNL, who was her favorite. She first asked if Lorne Michaels was watching, to which Martin said that he definitely wasn’t, to which she responded by saying Mike Myers.
He then introduced Pete Holmes by saying that he has many comedy influences, such as Conan O’Brien, Ray Romano, Jerry Seinfeld, and then he asked if there was someone he was missing. Pete then said “This is embarrassing, I can’t believe it,” before saying Bill Burr, Mike Birbiglia, John Mulaney, Nick Kroll, Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, and Steve Martin.
He then moved on to Von Miller, who was wearing a weird camouflage looking outfit for some reason, and he asked Von who he thought was in better shape, to which he responded Martin, as they work out at the same gym and he sees him lifting all the weights, to which Martin responded that he hates leg day.
From there, it was time to meet the first two contestants.
The first contestant we were introduced to was Shaquille, who is an electrician that also welds as well if he finds anything that seems like it has any use on it, creative shape, unique color, and old material. Martin then responded that if he wanted old material, Pete was right over there, to which Pete responded that he was on tour currently, which is also a joke that he made on his other episode. I guess he correctly thought it was very funny and stuck with it for two episodes.
The second contestant we were introduced to was Kristin, who has been a science teacher for 33 years, and she also said that one of her children likes to say that he landscapes for a cemetery, which she admitted is another way of saying he’s a grave digger.
From there it was time for the game to start and for Kristin’s first question.
Her question was “Spirit Airlines notoriously charges extra for everything, even an armrest. But they crossed the line when they made passengers pay extra for __________.” From there, my parents and my Uncle said “Bathroom” and “Seatbelts” as answers. At this time, the celebrities were, in their words, locking in their answers, and after Martin said that Andrea was keeping them waiting, she said that she was locking right then, even though she had no idea what it meant, and Thomas added that it was a terrible answer, but she was locking.
After everyone had locked in their answers, Thomas pulled out TWO GLASSES OF RED WINE, and his reasoning for this was that they gave him two cup holders, to which Martin responded that it was so great to bring alcoholism back to prime time.
From there, Kristin gave her answer, which was “Oxygen.”
Thomas then revealed that he wrote “Hot Nuts,” which I don’t understand at all. Maybe certain airlines offer complimentary peanuts, but I don’t know. It also led to Martin saying that it was Thomas’ nickname in high school, which was funny.
Andrea took her time revealing her answer, prompting Martin to say that he had a flight on Friday, and if you needed proof that this episode was her first time on the show, I’m about to prove it to you, as she asked Thomas for help on HOW TO DISPLAY THE CARD WITH HER ANSWER, and she had to be told to turn it around. Her answer was then revealed to be “Blankets.”
Tituss then revealed that he wrote “Air,” which was considered to be a match. Pete then said that was clever because as a scientist, she knew that oxygen is in air, and then he apologized to Martin for “Riffing across him,” before then saying that they were told to have a party-like atmosphere, she was a scientist, she said oxygen, he said air, he was pointing out that there is oxygen in air, as she would know. Martin then said that Pete was creating a party atmosphere, before adding that none of it was usable, but he liked the attitude, which is also what kept him out of the big money.
Ego then revealed that she wrote “The Boarding Pass,” saying that they make you pay for your printed boarding pass, to which Pete responded that he thinks she got conned at LaGuardia.
Pete then revealed that he wrote “Seatbelts” as his answer.
Von then revealed that he wrote “Bathroom” as his answer, meaning that Kristin had one point.
From there, it was time for Shaquille’s first question.
His question was “Brody the Bro said ‘Bro, I knew my son was going to be a personal trainer when he grew up. He used to crawl out of his crib at night just to use my _________.” The first answer that I could come up with was “Weights.”
After everyone had locked in their answers, Shaquille gave his answer, which was “BowFlex,” which prompted Pete to say that Shaquille had a deal with BowFlex, and Martin to say that he had an instinct that a lot of points were coming Shaquille’s way, and that the top of his brain would have gone to “BowFlex.”
Thomas then said that this was interesting, because Shaquille had said a specific version of what he had written, which was “Weights,” and despite his and Pete’s protests, the judges didn’t count it as a match. Pete then tried literally explaining what BowFlex was, which resulted in the answer getting buzzed again, which resulted in Martin saying they were not only buzzing his answer, they were also buzzing the idea of Pete.
Andrea then revealed that she wrote “Barbells” as her answer, and despite her attempts at saying it was a match with whatever BowFlex was, the judges didn’t think it was a match, which resulted in Martin saying to Pete “She doesn’t have a clue what BowFlex is,” which resulted in Andrea channeling Robert De Niro, asking Martin “Are you talking to me,” to which Martin responded that he was talking to her, and in the middle of her answer, he got bored and started talking to Pete.
Tituss then revealed that he wrote “Protein Powder” as his answer.
Ego then revealed that she wrote “Jockstrap” as her answer.
Martin then reminded the celebrities that they were looking for “Bowflex,” to which Thomas said that they would not find one, as they haven’t been made since the 80s, and Pete followed that up by saying they wouldn’t find one, because it wasn’t eBay.
Pete then revealed that he wrote “Human Growth Hormone” as his answer.
Von then revealed that he wrote “Weight Room” as his answer, and Martin was about to start trying to fight for a match here, but the judges immediately determined that it wasn’t.
This meant that at the end of Round 1, Kristin had one point and Shaquille had zero points.
After that, it was time for Round 2 and Kristin’s second question, where she could match with the other panelists.
Her question was “Todd the T-Rex admitted, ‘I’m really feeling my age. In fact, after I bone my wife, I immediately go _____________.’” From there, I figured that the correct answer was "Extinct.”
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Kristin gave her answer, which was “Extinct.”
Thomas then revealed that he also wrote “Extinct” as his answer.
Andrea then revealed that she wrote “To Sleep” as her answer.
Ego then revealed that she also wrote “To Sleep” as her answer.
Pete then revealed that he wrote “Extinct” as his answer.
Von then revealed that he wrote “Prehistoric” as his answer.
This meant that Kristin now had three points, and Shaquille needed to match three to tie and four to win.
His second question was “In a big step backwards, Kendrick Lamar released the diss track the world has not been waiting for about Pete Holmes. It’s called White Like __________.” I couldn’t think of a good answer for this one, as the only thing I could think of was “Snow,” and my Uncle had a great answer, which was “Pete.” After he had locked in his answer, Thomas said that he was very good at the Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl dance, which he proceeded to “demonstrate,” and by that I mean not.
After everyone had locked in their answers, Shaquille gave his answer, which was “Milk.”
Thomas then revealed that he wrote “Wonder Bread,” which Martin said was a good answer for someone who doesn’t help people.
Andrea then revealed that she wrote “Rice” as her answer, which Martin said was fine in a non-helpful way, prompting Andrea to ask if there was someone else out in the wings that wanted to take her spot.
Tituss then revealed that he wrote “Pete” as his answer.
Ego prefaced her answer by saying that she was notorious for losing game shows, and then revealed that she wrote “Rice” as her answer, which meant that Kristin had won.
As Shaquille was leaving the stage, Von and Pete revealed that their answers were “Us” and “Bread” respectively.
After that, it was time for Super Match, and Kristin now had a chance to win $25,000. She then said that if she won that money, she would want to send a group of her students for full scholarship to go enjoy a week in space camp.
It started with an Audience Match, and they polled the Match Game Home Audience and got their most popular responses to “Pitch _________.” Much like many of the past questions during this part of the show, one answer was immediately obvious to me, and I drew a blank on any other answers, pun very much intended.
The first celebrity she enlisted the help of was Tituss, who said the answer I immediately thought of, “Perfect.”
She then enlisted the help of Pete, who said “Black.”
Her third choice was Ego, who questioned why Kristin even chose her and had to go to Andrea for a suggestion, which Thomas seemed confused by, as they had both been wrong every time, to which Ego responded “You go to hell, Thomas!” She then said “Speaking of hell,” and gave her answer of “Fork.”
Kristin then chose to go with “Fork” as her answer, which surprised me, as I felt “Perfect” was obvious, and Tituss clearly disapproved of her answer choice.
From there, the third most popular answer for $2,000 was revealed to be “Fork,” meaning that Kristin had just won $2,000.
The $3,000 answer was then revealed to be “Black,” and the $5,000 answer was revealed to be “Perfect.”
Kristin then had the chance to multiply it by five with the Celebrity Head To Head Match, and win $10,000.
She chose to match Tituss, who had to write down his answer to “_______ Sign.” From there, the only answer I could think of was “Stop.”
After Tituss quickly locked in his answer, Kristin gave her answer, which was “Stop.” Tituss then revealed that was also what he wrote down, meaning that Kristin had just won $10,000.
After the show came back from commercial, Martin “complimented” Pete, telling him that his comedy was like crypto, as he doesn’t understand it, and yet he admires it.
From there, it was time to meet the next two contestants.
The first contestant we were introduced to was Christopher, who was in the Navy on a surface ship, as he was afraid of water, and he ended up learning how to swim in the Navy, and then a number of years later, he took an intro to scuba diving course, and he got the bug, and everywhere he goes, he tries to scuba dive, as he has dove in the Philippines, Malta, Bahamas, Bermuda, and Mexico.
The second contestant we were introduced to was Tre, who was ten years into his dream job, which is a knight of the realm at Medieval Times, and he also explained that the reason why his hair was so long is because he was encouraged to grow it for the show.
From there, it was time for the game to start and Tre’s first question.
Before the question was read, Martin handed the card to Thomas, and had him read the question instead.
The question started by saying “Hand card to Thomas Lennon. He will read it.” Yes it actually said that on the card, and yes, he actually read that part out loud more than once.
The question itself was “So glad to clear this up on TV - No, I’m not related to John Lennon. Yes, I consider myself hot enough to be related to John ___________.” For some reason, I had trouble coming up with an answer, as the only names I could think of were John Wayne, who has been dead for so many decades, and three celebrities from The Masked Singer who are named John that the panelists definitely don’t know, which were John Schneider, John Oates, and John Elway.
After the panelists had locked in their answers, Tre gave his answer, which was “Wayne,” which prompted Martin to say that he loves when they go current.
Thomas prefaced his answer by saying that he did not come there in a DeLorean from the past, so he accidentally put “Stamos.” Martin then interrupted everything so that everyone could appreciate the joke Thomas made, as there didn’t seem to be much of a reaction from anyone.
Andrea then revealed that she wrote “Travolta” as her answer.
Tituss then revealed that he also wrote “Stamos.”
Ego then revealed that she wrote “Hamm” as her answer.
Pete then said that it was 2025, and an appropriate hot John for the time was his answer, which was also “Hamm,” and he also added that John Wayne wouldn’t have been the correct answer back in 1962.
Von then said that he was stuck in the medieval vibe with Game Of Thrones, and wrote down “Snow.”
This meant that Tre did not score any points, and from there, it was time for Christopher’s first question.
His question was “Everyone’s heard of the weight loss drug Ozempic. Now there’s a drug called Spouse-zemic to help women improve their marriage. One shot, and it makes your partner’s ____________ disappear.” From there, I had no idea what a possible answer was, and my parents were only able to come up with weight related answers, to which I had to remind them that was already Ozempic.
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Christopher gave his answer, which was “Mouth.”
Thomas then revealed that he wrote “Attitude” as his answer.
Andrea then revealed that she wrote “Underwear” as her answer, prompting Martin to ask her if she didn’t want the contestants to win any money at all.
Tituss then revealed that he also wrote “Attitude” as his answer.
Ego then revealed that she also wrote “Attitude” as her answer, which told me that it was the correct answer.
Pete then revealed that he wrote “Gut” as his answer.
Von then revealed that he wrote “Voice” as his answer, which was considered a match.
This meant that at the end of Round 1, Christopher had one point and Tre had zero points.
After that, the show came back from commercials and Martin said that when he says he loves these celebrities, he’s not only speaking from his heart, he’s speaking from the teleprompter.
From there, it was time for Christopher’s second question, where he could match with the remaining five panelists.
His question was “The band Rage Against The Machine quit the music industry and got boring office jobs. These days, the only machine they’re raging against is the ____________.” From there, we all knew that the correct answer was “Copier.”
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Christopher gave his answer, which was “Copier.”
Thomas then asked if he should call him Christopher or Chris, to which he responded that either one was fine, to which Martin told him that it was Christopher, so Thomas called him Christopher, which prompted Martin to tell him that it was Chris.
Thomas then revealed that his answer was “Copy Machine.”
Andrea then revealed that her answer was “Microwave,” which she admitted she wrote because she was hungry. This prompted Ego to say that someone should get Andrea’s snack, which made Andrea ask her if she also wrote “Microwave,” to which Ego said that she didn’t write it, but she couldn’t say what she wrote, which Martin Short said was called suspense.
Tituss then revealed that he also wrote “Copy.”
Ego then asked how much Martin valued consistency, to which he responded “Tremendous,” and Ego followed that up by saying that she was consistent in that she was wrong again, as her answer was “Printer.” Ego then thought that she could convince the judges that it was the same thing as a copier, to which Pete, Thomas, and Martin immediately shot down her idea, and then she started saying that there are machines that are four-in-one, meaning that they have a fax, copier, printer, and scanner, to which Thomas told her she was talking about a multifunction, which didn’t change anything. Andrea then jokingly asked if Martin could get the judges to say that “Microwave” was a match, as in a four-in-one microwave, to which Martin said that he would kill to get the four minutes back from Ego.
Pete then revealed that his answer was “Photocopier,” which meant that Christopher now had four points.
It was now time for Tre’s second question, and he needed four points to tie and five points to win.
His question was “Baseball star Shohei Ohtani is 6’4”, but he has a much smaller brother named Shohei Ohtiny, and he’s small enough to wear his brother’s World Series ring as a ___________.” I could not think of a single answer for this question, but my Mom did think of “Crown,” and my Uncle did think of “Jock Strap.” While the celebrities were writing down their answers, Pete said that he felt very strongly that there was a correct and obvious answer, which was all he was going to say.
After all the celebrities had locked in their answers, Tre gave his answer, which was “Belt.”
Thomas then revealed that his answer was “Necklace.”
Andrea then revealed that her answer was “Earrings.”
Tituss then revealed that his answer was also “Necklace,” which meant that Christopher had won.
As Tre was leaving the stage, Ego, Pete, and Von revealed that they wrote “Belt,” “Jock Strap,” and “Bracelet” respectively. By the way, I think it’s crazy that there were two questions on this episode where a celebrity wrote “Jock Strap” as their answer.
After that, it was time for the Super Match, and Christopher had a chance to win $25,000. When asked what he would do with that money, he said that he would go back to Malta to scuba, but this time he would bring his family and let them see the island and more of Europe as well.
They started with an Audience Match, and they polled the Match Game Home Audience, and got their most popular responses to “________ Cream.” A few answers occurred to me, but there was one that I knew was going to be the top answer, which was “Ice.”
The first celebrity he enlisted a suggestion from was Pete, who asked him which one he wanted, meaning the third, the second, or the first, but then he ultimately chose to go with the hard one, saying that we all knew what the number one answer was, so he said that the number three answer was “Cold.”
He then asked Thomas for a suggestion, and he said “Ice.”
The last celebrity he asked for a suggestion was Tituss, who said “Whipped.”
The answer that Christopher chose to go with was “Ice,” and from there the $2,000 answer was revealed to be “Heavy,” which prompted Tituss to ask who they were polling, which is a question that I have often asked for other Audience Matches. The $3,000 answer was then revealed to be “Whipped,” and the $5,000 answer was then revealed to be “Ice,” meaning that Christopher had just won $5,000, and he now had a chance to win $25,000.
For the Celebrity Head To Head Match, he chose to stick with Thomas, who had to write down his answer to “Thumb _________.” From there, a few answers occurred to us, which were “Tack,” “War,” “Wrestling,” and “Drive.”
After Thomas had locked in his answer, Christopher said that he had two answers, and the one he was going with was “Drive,” which didn’t seem to impress some of the other panelists.
Thomas then told Christopher he was positive he knew what his other answer was, and then revealed that he had written “Nail,” which Christopher admitted was his other answer. This meant that Christopher didn’t make a match, but he still won $5,000.
Overall, this was another great episode of Match Game, and I’ll see you all next week, with the next one!
